Help By Design: Identity For Humanity

This project is always dear to my heart. I was a young and curious art director at Leo Burnett when the Tōhoku earthquake triggered a series of deadly tsunamis that hit Japan in March 2011 during the freezing winter. It washed away villages, caused a nuclear disaster with radioactive leaks in water, claimed almost 30,000 lives, and left 300,000+ people homeless. The managing director, who had previously lived in Japan, and I initially thought of sending emails to NYC's creative community requesting donations. We quickly evolved this into a silent design auction to support Japan's disaster relief mission through the Red Cross. People could donate design items and bid for others in exchange. This became our quickest assignment, with virtually no budget, a tiny team consisting of just me as the sole designer and a few others handling logistics, and our only campaign asset—the "Help By Design" logo I created.

I worked with urgent priority, aiming to create a single high-impact visual to promote the event. The identity represented Japan in mourning—the sun symbol from their flag 🇯🇵, normally shown on a bright white background, was instead placed on a gloomy black background. Yet when combined, these elements vividly shone through the darkness, symbolizing the fight to recover and rise again. I created the identity in a day, then we released it through social media and emailed invitations to design agencies, professionals, and media outlets in NYC. Within hours, it became the talk of the town. We received overwhelming responses from well-regarded design companies and individual designers—including Pentagram and Milton Glaser—asking to participate. The simplicity of the identity design, with its strong impact, effectively captured attention, conveyed our intention, and ultimately contributed to the auction's success and the incredible proceeds we raised in just one day. Looking back, the logo still looks fresh today and reminds me how powerful design can be—bringing us together to work collectively on a great cause that helped those in need.
